What is Facial Fat Grafting?

What Happens During the Procedure?

Fat transfer can be done under deep twilight or local anesthesia, depending on how much fat will be removed.

Liposuction will be performed in the area where fat is being taken (typically the central abdomen, flanks, or thighs), and the fat will be purified and put into a syringe. The purified fat will then be injected into the area where volume is desired.

Not only does this achieve more volume; it also improves the appearance of the skin. Fat transfer takes approximately one hour, depending on the area(s) to be treated.

Recovery

Although the majority of fat transfer patients go back to work and normal life 3-5 days after the procedure, it will take about a week for the majority of bruising to resolve, and two weeks for the majority of swelling to improve. Light exercise can be resumed after one week, but intense exercise should be avoided for six weeks.

Results

A big difference between dermal fillers and fat transfer is that results from fat transfer last longer, and greater volumization can be achieved. Final results may take up to six months (you will see gradual improvement and progress over those months). About 1/3 of the injected fat will be lost over the first six weeks. Additional treatments may be needed to get the desired amount of volume. Once the desired results are achieved, they can last many years.
